Mission Beach

A part of the Great Green WayThe hideaway township of Mission Beach is surrounded by a lush backdrop of World Heritage listed wet tropical rainforest, sunkissed white sandy beaches and the silvery shimmering blues of the Cora Sea.

Sejala Beach House

Sejala Beach House is a magical place for an unforgettable tropical experience on absolute beachfront setting under the coconut trees – the most luxurious accommodation in Mission Beach proper. No travel from surrounding beaches – just a few metres through the natural foreshore to the main beach and four minutes walk to the casual dining and shopping in the peaceful little township of Mission Beach where you will still find that old far north Queensland tropical charm and ambience.

Sejala has been thoughtfully appointed with every attention to detail. The beautiful old timber house captures the elegance and understated luxury so evocative of the tropics with breezy light filled rooms, shuttered doors and windows, painted furniture, lazy overhead fans, courtyards, ponds, beach chairs, hammocks and exotic plants and fragrant frangipani everywhere.

The large pavilion style sitting room opens onto either the flagstone terrace overlooking the Coral Sea and the islands beyond or the stunning very private glass-tiled terrace pool and sunbathing area. The in-house pool is protected by a planting of pink ginger and mandevillea and the romance of night time bathing under the huge starry sky is a special Sejala experience.

27 August 2008

Magnetic Island

I am driving from Mission Beach this coming weekend. Going to hire a scooter (only$35.00 for the day) and checkout the length and breadth of the Island. Its been 7 years since I have been there. I reckon if I didn't live in Mission Beach my next choice would be' Maggie'. I just love it there!!

25 August 2008

Lots of visitors in town

I have had a busy morning so far with visitors to Mission Beach wanting to know what to do today as there is a bit of wet weather around. I have sent people to the Tully Sugar Mill for a tour, a drive into the Tablelands to check out the waterfalls and fig trees and off to Mena Creek to visit Paronella Park. All great options I think.

24 August 2008

Tully Sugar Mill tour

Well I finally got to the Tully Sugar Mill yesterday for the tour. It is certainly worth it. Its massive!!. The engineering in the place is just mind boggling. I drove back to Mission Beach thinking how I will have to do more of such outings. It really was fantastic.

17 August 2008

A good time was had by all

Well it looks like the Mission Beach State School should be very pleased with the Banana Festival. When I arrived yesterday afternoon there were lots of people enjoying the stalls, the climbing wall and jumping castles as well as just lounging around in the sun. The food and drink vendors looked to be doing a roaring trade, and all that means great things for the School. Oh and of course I always love the fireworks too. So well done to all those that put in the hard yards to make it happen!

16 August 2008

We followed it up with a lovely lunch at the Mena Creek pub.....a good day was had by all!

You too can spend a day half day on the Barron River or a full day on the Tully River. Come into the

Its a bright sunny day today

If your lucky enough to be in Mission Beach today, then you know what a bright sunny day it is. I wish I wasn't working so I could go out and enjoy it. A walk on the beach looking out at Dunk Island would be a great way to spend the afternoon I think.

07 August 2008

Eating out!

There are so many restaurant, cafe and bar options in Mission Beach that sometimes its hard to choose where to eat. Last night I dined at Jetty's Cafe & Bar with friends, and all three of us enjoyed our meals. It is great to be spoilt for choice I think, so if your a visitor or a local to Mission Beach and don't want to cook then you don't have too!

05 August 2008

Travelling on Greyhound

For those of you travelling on a Greyhound bus, Mission Beach is not a rest area, ( it is a drop off and pickup point only ) this means do not go to the toilet, buy food or drink or go for a walk.......you will get left behind. It happened again to two girls today, all of their gear was left on the bus, not just their backpacks but their bags with passport, wallets etc. Not a fun thing to happen while on holidays.

01 August 2008

School Camp =)

Tully once again proved why it's been named the wettest town in Australia. It's a pitty the rains had to fall whilst I was on school camp at Murray Falls ( approx. 1hr from Mission Beach) . Our camp ground was almost evacuated because of rising rivers and we were all cold and wet for 4 days. By far the highlight of the camp was attempting to float home-made rafts (with 20 kids on each) down the swollen Murray River. Most of us were very unsuccessful as parts of our rafts floated away before we could actually get on them. Apart from the rain, the camp was a great success and I would recommend Murray Falls to anybody looking for a nice place for a swim, picnic or camping spot.

31 July 2008

Big day yesterday

I had a friend call me to ask if I could help her out, she needed me to drive from Mission Beach to Cairns, catch a charter flight to Georgetown ( inland ) and then drive the 4.5hrs back to Cairns to return a rental car, and then drive home to Mission Beach. It was a big day but quite fun, particularly as it was a small 4 seater plane and I was able to sit next to the pilot as I was the only passenger, how cool is that!

30 July 2008

South Johnstone Butchers

Coming back to Mission Beach from the Atherton Tablelands on Monday, I came through the little town of South Johnstone. This was excellent I thought at I pulled up at the butchers there. Its one of the best butcher shops in Australia. He smokes his own hams and meats and salamis are made on the premises. Mmmm...mmmm Oh yeh...my double smoked pork chops were a real hit last night. I will be going back to stock up sooner rather than later!!!

29 July 2008

Some lovely NZ tourists came into the Mission Beach Information Station today and told me that Mission Beach was by far the best beach they had been to in Australia. Funny...they didn't have to tell me. I already knew :) !!!

25 July 2008

Leaving Mission Beach

We have had some lovely visitors staying in Mission Beach, and coming in to the Mission Beach Information Station every other day to work on their laptop. Today they told me that this is probably their last time in as they have to head off to Sydney on Sunday. I can't believe how quickly their six week visit has gone, its easy to spend that much time in such a beautiful spot...... thats why we live here.

24 July 2008

Market Days

Its Monster Market time at Mission Beach again this weekend. They are always fantastic. Lots of local produce available. However this weekend I am going to go to the Yungaburra Markets on the Atherton Tablelands. They are on the last Saturday of each month. For 12 years now I have been trying to get there and this weekend I am finally going!!. Staying at the historic Yungaburra Pub will just top off a great weekend.

22 July 2008

21 July 2008

Dogs and Coconutz

Did you know that most dogs like eating coconuts. I hadn't had a coconut for a while so I strolled down to Mission Beach where there is always an abundance of coconuts. Brought a few home and opened them up and the dogs just zoomed on in for their share. Even my normally meat eating canines love it.

20 July 2008

We have a big television here at the Mission Beach Information Station showing people having a great time white water rafting on the Tully River. I keep looking at the screen and it makes me want to go again.

Sunny at the moment

Its looking pretty sunny outside today here in Mission Beach. It is forecast for scattered showers over the weekend but I'm hoping that they are wrong about this. At only 10/15 knots it is a great time to go out to the Reef for some snorkelling or scuba diving or a spot of fishing. Whatever you choose I hope you have fun!

18 July 2008

15 July 2008

The Python & The Green Tree Frog

I was amazed yesterday to walk into my outdoor bathroom and hear the last crying croak from my resident green tree frog who has been living in the laundry tub for the last year or so. Yes I did cry but as the most amazing metalic blue tree python slithered back out to the forest with my friend half consumed I did witness the beauty of this place we live in right there.....in my bathroom!! Mission Beach still has that natural beauty and all the critters within it (except my green tree frog). I hope we can keep it that way for a while yet.

Rain rain go away

It's the first day of a new school term for me and it's bucketing down here in Mission Beach. I would much rather be watching movies in bed.

14 July 2008

Good places to eat

There are so many eating options here in Mission Beach. Friends and I went out to Scotty's Beach Bar & Grill ( or just Scotty's to the locals ) last night and really enjoyed out meals. The variety allows for all tastes with lasange, reef & beef, fish, rissotto and lamb all good choices for us. Save yourself the trouble of cooking and doing the dishes and eat out at one of our great restaurants.

13 July 2008

Lazy Days

Today I enjoyed lunch with my mum at one of the many cafe's up at North Mission Beach. The atmosphere up there is great and the food is not too bad either. After lunch we had a cruise around some of the local shops and art galleries, what a great way to spend the afternoon!

The Kennedy Walking Track

Well with the glorious weather that has finally been bestowed upon us this weekend, I think I shall pack my backpack and head down the Kennedy Walking Track. This is one of the most picturesque walks that Mission Beach has to offer. Starting from the Southern end of South Mission Beach, the 7km track winds around headlands and across deserted beaches to the Hull River mouth.
This walk is a must if you have a day to spare in Mission Beach. Come into the Mission Beach Information Station for maps and directions

10 July 2008

Watching the rafters

Yesterday we drove from Mission Beach to Tully Gorge to watch the white water rafters. There is a lookout where you can go to see them, and with 21 rafts going past it was quite a sight to see. The gorge itself is fabulous and we have photos to prove it. Topped off with a picnic right on the river further down and the day was just perfect. Come into the Mission Beach Information Station and I can tell you exactly where to go so you can see them too.

09 July 2008

Full Town

Mission Beach is just about at peak season. All the southern folk have started to stream into town chasing the warmer weather. Its not that tropical though!! I have certainly been wearing my Ugg Boots for the last few weeks!

06 July 2008

Busy in Mission Beach

Well its been a busy morning for me today at Mission Beach, lots of people around to enjoy our lovely piece of paradise. I have sold bus tickets, booked a trip to the Whitsundays and Fraser Island, accommodation in Agnes Waters/1770 and had people on the internet and printing out holiday snaps......so as you can see we can help you with a variety of things here at the Mission Beach Information Station. Come in and visit us when you get to town.

05 July 2008

Pandanus Beachfront Apartments

Friends of mine are staying here in Mission Beach, they have the whole family with them, 8 adults and 5 children. I found the perfect accommodation at Pandanus Beachfront Apartments, they have the complex to themselves and the children are quite comfortable roaming from one apartment to another. Its across the road from the beach and close to a park with a playground, and of course I also ordered beautiful sunny weather for them, how nice of me!

04 July 2008

School holidays

You can tell its school holidays time, there are lots of visitors in Mission Beach at the moment. I am so glad the weather is being kind to them, bright sunny days and cool nights ( which is great for sleeping I think ).

03 July 2008

Its good to be home

I have been away from Mission Beach for 10 days visiting my family down south, and I can tell you in its very very cold down there. As I walked on the lovely South Mission Beach this morning in my shorts and t-shirt I can tell you that as much as I love my family it is good to be home!

29 June 2008

Busy Weekend in Mission

On the weekend of the 19th of July, there are a couple of weddings as well a surf lifesaving carnival happening here in Mission Beach. I was looking for accommodation for a family this morning and a lot places were already booked out . . . so if your thinking about visiting us on that weekend, its best to book as soon as possible.

28 June 2008

The Big Night

Well tonight is the big night everyone has been waiting for in Mission Beach. Its the celebration of the re launch of The Elandra Resort (previously The Horizon). The theme is 'safari glamour' so it will be fantastic to see everybody out tonight in their finest. Singer Grace Jones from America is the nights big act. Wow!!! Its going to be a big one!!

27 June 2008

19 June 2008

Seeing a Cassowary

My Mum came to visit me in Mission Beach for 10 days at the end of May, and I am sad to say that she did not get to see a cassowary. Yesterday I was driving to Cairns and managed to see one walking along the side of the road and thought about how unlucky Mum was not to see this most amazing animal that we locals here at Mission Beach are so proud of.

18 June 2008

Roundabouts!!

Well it looks like Mission Beach has its first roundabout. Wow!!! We really are becoming modernized here! When do we see the first set of traffic lights? Hopefully not in my time....

17 June 2008

The Elandra at Mission Beach

For those who know Mission Beach you may remember visiting or staying at The Horizon, it has had a face lift and has come back as The Elandra at Mission Beach. From the accounts I have heard so far it is quite fabulous, so if your in town and looking for a great place to stay or would like to dine out then the new look restaurant is a very good option on both counts.

16 June 2008

Not visiting Mission Beach

I will be driving from Mission Beach to Airlie Beach this weekend because my friend from PNG is competing in the Outrigger Regatta on Hamilton Island. I'm disappointed that she can't visit Mission Beach while she is back in the country, as there is so much I want to show her about this fabulous place I live in, oh well hopefully next time.

15 June 2008

Walking in Mission Beach

I was shown a great walk in Mission Beach yesterday. You start at the end of Bingil Bay beach and walk through the rainforest around Ninney Point and on to Brooks Beach. As it isn't a National Park walk it is not maintained so in places it has quite an off road feeling but was absolutely fabulous all the same. Next time we are going to pack a picnic to enjoy on Brooks Beach, and I think most of the time you would have it all to yourself.......just lovely!

14 June 2008

A new addition to town

We have a new addition to Mission Beach, friends of mine had a lovely baby boy yesterday, after a bit of a wait they are really pleased to welcome him to the family.....Congratulations!

11 June 2008

Mission Beach finally has a major supermarket, Woolworth's started going up a few months ago and it's nearly finished, how exciting !! Hopefully it will be ready for opening before the end of this month.

10 June 2008

Back in Mission Beach

Well I am back in beautiful Mission Beach after a fantastic weekend sailing in the Whitsundays. Its nice there but I reckon you can't beat Mission Beach. Its so laid back, tropical and untouched (so far). Lets hope it stays that way!!

09 June 2008

Little bit of rain around

There has been a little bit of rain around in Mission Beach for the long weekend, not enough to stop people from enjoying themselves though. The good thing is that even if its wet its not cold and thats what I love about not living down south anymore.

08 June 2008

Being prepared

I have chatted before about when to be prepared and when not to be.....yesterday I had a situation where I believe perhaps they should have been. I received a call at about 3pm from a family of 2 adults and 6 children travelling to Mission Beach, arriving at 7pm and wanting accommodation for 1 night. Now there are 2 things which make this tricky, 1 is fitting 8 people in and the 2nd is doing so on a long weekend where most of the accommodation is already fully booked.......a time where being prepared would have been good I think as I was unable to help them.

06 June 2008

Long weekend in Mission Beach

01 June 2008

Rainforest Walks

What I love about Mission Beach are the lovely rainforest walks. With my Mum here visiting from Victoria I really wanted to show off about how good a place it is to live. We went and did the Lacey Creek and the Licuala Walks, which are looking really great at the moment, she is so excited to see so much green, not much in her drought area. I was hoping she would get to see a cassowary but so far this has not happened, oh well we have a couple of days to go.

31 May 2008

Mareeba Wetlands

If your heading north from Mission Beach to the Cairns Highlands, then I can recommend you go and visit the Mareeba Tropical Savanna and Wetland Reserve. There are 4 different self guided walks around the reserve, a boat cruise going out 3 times a day as well as a sunset cruise. You can even stay there in deluxe tents. I took my Mum there and we had a great time, we did one of the 1 hour walks which took us around the lagoon and then enjoyed a boat cruise where we were able to see the Lotus flower up close, they are just beautiful. As it was an overcast day we didn't get to see the resident crocodiles or turtles who normally lay out and sun themselves on a bright day. A great day out.

Paronella Park

If your visiting or living in Mission Beach and have access to a car then I strongly recommend you go to Paronella Park, it is an easy 40 minute drive. They run a 45 minute guided tour every 30 minutes and then you get to wander around this fabulous park at your leisure. My mum is visiting from Victoria so I took her along, this was my third time and I really wanted her to enjoy it as much as I do, which she did, phew!

Mission Fitness

For a little place like Mission Beach, the local gym is a pretty popular place. I have been going to the afternoon aerobics classes (which are fantastic) and there are always heaps of people doing their own thing with the usual gym equipment. So if your looking for a quite, friendly place to get fit, try Mission Fitness!!

Subway in Mission Beach

People keep asking me. "Is there a Subway in Mission Beach?...Is there a MacDonalds in Mission Beach?....Where is Coles? .....Wow....Is there a Birch Carroll Cinema someone asked yesterday!!! No...!!!!!

Mum is coming to visit

After almost 2 years living in Mission Beach, my mum is finally coming to visit. I collect her from the airport in Cairns tomorrow. I can't wait to show her around town, so she will be able to see why I love living here. I'm hoping she gets some clear blue skies not just the rain we have had over the last couple of days.

Travelling by Coach

If your travelling in and out of Mission Beach on Greyhound or Premier then I would suggest that you buy your ticket early. Some of the coaches are already starting to fill up and this will only happen more and more as it gets busier over the next couple of months. I know its fun to cruise along sometimes but if you need to be somewhere at a certain time and day then get your ticket, its not fun if you miss out on things.

Rafting weather

We are expecting a bit of wet weather in Mission Beach this weekend. This does not mean that you have to stay indoors. Why not go white water rafting on the famous Tully River?!! There are two company's that raft the Tully and both will pick you up from wherever you stay in Mission Beach. Rafting is a great, fun day out regardless of the weather conditions.

Winter is Here

Winter has come to Mission Beach early this year it seems. I have had the old PJ's out the last couple of nights. Going to have to go and buy some ugg boots in Cairns this week for sure!!

19 May 2008

How good is the weather

I know I know I shouldn't always be bragging about how fantastic the weather is here in Mission Beach, but seriously it has been absolutely heavenly for the last 4 days. I can't help but tell my friends and family from down south, a bit mean I know but I'm feeling quite smug about where I live at the moment. You should come and enjoy it too!

18 May 2008

It has been an absolutely beautiful day in Mission Beach today. I really enjoyed sitting down at the beach to eat my lunch, the water was just like glass. I really wished that I didn't have to leave to come to work but I know that another day just like it is always going to come along, thats why I live here.

Rainforest Apartments

Mission Beach Rainforest Apartments are located in a culdesac a very short walk to one of Tropical North Queensland's best beaches - 14km of clean sand with not a mangrove or mudflat in sight! They feature 3, 2 bedroom apartments amongst a tropical rainforest setting.

Wet Cross Country

It has been bucketing down with rain all day and it doesnt look like its going to stop any time soon. The Tully High School cross country is on this afternoon and at the moment the course looks more like a lake than a running track. Thankfully I'm here working at the Mission Beach Information Station instead of running around the muddy cane fields.

Mothers Day

I hope all the Mum's in Mission Beach had a lovely day yesterday. There were certainly plenty of families hanging out together on the beach. People were flying kites, building sandcastles, fishing, walking their dogs and generally having a great time. That's what I love about living in far north Queensland, we can still do this in May, gotta love that!

11 May 2008

Well its my birthday today and I can't think of a better place to spend it than here in Mission Beach, it is an absolutely fabulous day outside and I can't wait to finish work so I can get out and enjoy it. My day will finish up with a BBQ with friends tonight.....just lovely.

There is nothing worse than having a plan for where you want to stay or what you want to do and missing out because there is no availability. Let us here at the Mission Beach Information Station help you out with anything from Cairns to Brisbane.

02 May 2008

Licuala Walk

As it was a pupil free day here in Mission Beach today we decided to go on a picnic. The Licuala Walk is a perfect spot as you can go for a walk first and then eat. We headed off on a quest to see turtles which unfortunately did not come out to play today but we had fun watching the fish swimming around instead. Then we decided to go inland off the main track to head into the water hole, oh how adventurous that ended up being, we had leech bites, wait-a-while scratches, mud all over us and huge grins from all involved as it turned out to be lots of fun indeed. If you have a couple of hours to spare get out there and enjoy the rainforest like we did.

01 May 2008

The Rain Is Back!!

Well I just turned around and looked out the window. Its raining again in Mission Beach. Can you believe it!! After a week of picture postcard weather I was getting used it. Oh well.....I guess we have to have that rainfall to keep Mission Beach looking as beautiful as ever.

30 April 2008

Weekend Weather

The weather in Mission Beach last weekend was just sooo nice. Not a cloud in sight and the water looked as flat as it could possibly be. If only I had a boat to enjoy the reef and tropical islands. Hopefully this weekend will be just as good.

Mission Beach Cafes

Mission Beach certainly is looking up with the addition of yet another two absolutely fantastic cafes in the last year. The 'Mint' cafe at Wongaling Beach and 'Just Saskias' at South Mission Beach. I have dined at both and was suitably impressed. The food is super fresh and the service is Mission Beach friendly!! So if you feel like a lazy start to a Saturday morning with the paper you know where to head!

28 April 2008

Cruising to the Islands

What fabulous fun my friends had on the weekend, they took their boat out for a cruise from Mission Beach to Brooke Island, Hinchinbrook Island and Dunk Island. They even stopped for some fantastic snorkelling in a protected area near Brooke Island. I so wish I was out with them and not working yesterday because is was such a glorious day.

27 April 2008

Flying out

If your leaving Mission Beach and have a flight from Cairns you must remember to co-ordinate your flight with the bus transport, otherwise you end up like the young lady in here today struggling to match them up. You have to add in the time to travel to Cairns, travel to the airport and then allow for your check in time.......not always a good idea to leave it to the day before. Come in to the Mission Beach Information Station and we will help you to sort it!

26 April 2008

I love having friends to visit

I really really love having friends come and visit me here in Mission Beach, unfortunately they were only here for a very short time. We did go out and have a lovely dinner at Nana Thai and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the sun at home. Next time I hope they can stay longer because there is so much I wanted to show them.

25 April 2008

Anzac Day

This morning I woke up bright and early at 4am to attend the dawn service parade in Tully on behalf of both of my grandfathers. It was a nice surprise to see so many Mission Beach locals also attending to pay their respects. This was my first dawn service and definitely won't be my last. =)

Another good reason to love Mission Beach

Today I was lucky enough to witness another good reason for living in Mission Beach. I was sitting down at the beach at Bingil Bay eating my lunch when I saw a mantaray swimming in front of us. It was having a great time swimming backwards and forwards. It was a fabulous treat for my friend and I, and of course we had to make the comment that this is why we do not live in the city.

I live in South Mission Beach and I must say I was really impressed with the number of early morning walkers that you see out and about. I headed off about 7.15am this morning and I certainly wasn't alone. I can't wait for the high tide time to change though so I can get back out onto the beach, its fabulous checking out the view of Dunk Island as you get your morning exercise.

19 April 2008

So come and visit, you can take a walk through the rainforest, snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, skydive, or raft the Tully River to name a few of the wonderful adventures in Mission Beach.

How jealous am I????

11 April 2008

The weather here in Mission Beach has been fantastic !!! Yesterday i spent all day lazying around the beach reading a good book. Hopefully i'll be out in the boat cruising around the islands tomorrow.

Magical Mission

Its another magical day in Mission Beach. I was travelling along the Mission Beach/Tully road today and there in an old banana paddock was a father Cassowary and 3 of his little chicks!!! Its was such an amazing sight. Mum of cause would have buggered off to let dad take care of the babies ....as female Cassowaries do. Oh dear...they really do have the life!!!

Oh to be a female Cassowary living in Mission Beach. How perfect!!

Here's Cheers to the Future! And I am not crying!!!!!

06 April 2008

Going on a holdiay

Its always hard to leave Mission Beach because it is such a great place to live and visit, but this time I think I can do it as I'm really excited about visiting my friend in Papua New Guinea. I will be missing out on meeting the number of visitors who come to Mission Beach during the school holidays, I hope they have as good a time here as I know I will in PNG!

05 April 2008

Saving those memories

When your on holidays you take so many photos, particularly now with the digital cameras, you can just go crazy. When your visiting Mission Beach you can come into the Information Station and save those memories to CD or DVD so you do not lose them, you can even print them if you would like to send some photos home to family and friends.
